Philosophy Statement
The sports program at BRMS is based on the premise that athletics is an integral part of the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade total school experience. Students at this age have a strong interest in sports that must be channeled into positive outcomes. Our sport programs will emphasize team building, sportsmanship, cooperation, and fair play. Developing student skills in conjunction with the concepts of hard work, dedication to a purpose, and sacrifice will have a major emphasis. Students will be afforded many opportunities designed to build self-esteem, self-confidence, and a positive attitude. Competition will be stressed in positive terms. The Black River Middle School sports program, must be kept in the proper perspective as a part of the larger educational program, secure in the knowledge that what is best for the students will always have priority.
What Participation in Interscholastic Events Means
The word participation in the context of the athletic philosophy for the BRMS sports program means that a child, once selected for a team will have the opportunity to have a as much actual playing time during a game as possible, determined by the coach of the team. The coach will make this determination based on a number of factors, such as ability, appropriateness of game situation, safety factors, a player’s readiness to play, health of the student, attitude, bench behavior, practice record, and general school attitude.
What this may mean is that based on all of these factors,
Every player may not play in every game.
